Halva Alfajores

Popular all over Latin America, dulce de leche confections called alfajores come in many variations. Here is a twist on this beloved classic,  halva alfajores cookies with an irresistible halva center and dusted with powdered sugar that will make you swoon at first bite. 


For the dough:

  • 200g butter
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup of chopped “Achva vanilla-flavored halva” 
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups of corn starch 
  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 pack baking powder.

For the filling:

  • 50g butter
  • 100g dark chocolate
  • tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 shot of high-quality whiskey
  • 1 cup of ground coconut, pistachio, or sesame. 


  • In a large bowl place 200g butter (cut to small cubes), ½ a cup of sugar, and a pinch of salt. Mix till creamy with a hand blender, next slowly add egg whites while constantly stirring.
  • Once the mixture is creamy, add ½ a cup of vanilla flavored halva, mix all together. 

  • In a separate bowl, mix 2 cups of cornflour, ½ a cup of white flour, and a pack of baking powder.
  • Slowly add the dry mixture to the blender till you get a smooth consistency. Wrap the dough with plastic wrap, and place in the fridge for an hour.
  • Meanwhile, line 2 baking trays with baking paper, and set the oven on 170 degrees.
  • With some flour on your workspace roll out the dough to 1 cm and cut out 3 cm circles. Then place on your baking trays with 1 cm space between each and bake for 6 minutes.
  • For the filling; melt 50g of butter and 100g chocolate, add a pinch of salt, 1 tsp of vanilla extract, and a shot of good whiskey.
  • Transfer the filling to a 16-inch piping bag, cover the top of each cookie and close with another cookie.
